Well Hung

Get your mind out of the gutter! Lights, we're talking how to hang your lighting.... appropriately. We're talking location, height. We've got you covered in all areas of your home..

Let's start with the first point of contact with your guests:

the Entryway-

This can be a tricky area. Watch for doors and stairways. You'll want to keep the base of the light at or around 8' minimum, if you have a door close by then you'll need to keep the style of light contained to a full flush mount (completely flush with the ceiling) or semi-flush mount (hangs slightly below the base of the light). If thats not something you need to worry about you'll have an array of lighting styles you could go with.

Living Room-

This is one of my favourite rooms for lighting. I try to keep it centred and usually over a coffee table. This light can be hung between 5'-7' above the floor, don't worry, it won't be too low. Make it a warm light and not too bright, obviously this light can make a statement.

Dinning Room-

A couple factors will always be present when hanging a light over the dining room table. How large is the light, is it glass, what is the shape etc. The most important thing to keep in mind is your preference. The height can vary anywhere from 28"-32" above the table. Try to install a light that will not obscure your guest or feel like it's interrupting a meal.

Kitchen Island-

Rule of thumb hang these lights in the centre line of the island and above shoulder height. They should also, like the dining room light be hung around 28"-35" above countertop.

Bathroom Vanity (hanging)-

Instead of over-the-mirror lighting, or wall sconces, I love the hanging pendant lights. (I also love these beside the bed instead of bedside lamps) These pendant lights should hang around 66" from the countertop or eye level.

BONUS- If you're replacing those crowding bedside table lamps with hanging pendants then the distance should be between 12"-20" from the mattress. If you have a bedside table make sure there is at least 14" between it and the bottom of the light.

Above Staircase-

If your fortunate enough to have a grande staircase that allows for a light feature consider yourself lucky! You'll need roughly 96" above the staircase.

Disclaimer: It's always a good idea to hire a professional when installing lighting !
