Mid-Century Modern

This is my favorite home style currently. I love the clean, the simple look. In my home I don't necessarily have one style but I make sure it flows, I don't want our home to feel scattered and not put together. OK so actually, that was a lie. My favorite style is made up of a few combo styles I call it- Bohemian-Century Chic. I like to mix Mid-Century with a little Bohemian and a touch of chic-ness. So FUN to mix some different styles, just don't go play out in left field. I also want to achieve a more minimalist look and for some reason I just can't seem to keep our house this way.

(stay tuned for our next post on how to attain and maintain a more minimalist look in your home )

The mid-century furniture look is very identifiable, so no need to stress when shopping you'll be able to zone in on what you're looking for right away. The color palate of this style is a darker neutral tone with a lighter saturated color to accent. Mid-Century modern furniture has straight clean lines with a smooth curved finish. There is never a lot of detail or 'flare' its simple yet holds a strong presence in the room. Rarely will you find colourful patterns on the fabric, or much color at all to be honest. The base of the furniture are most commonly finished with wood, but when you add a twist of modern you'll find metal and fibreglass quite common. The colors are normally introduced with a throw, pillows or a rug(s). I personally love adding in a Persian rug of some sorts or even a contemporary tribal-inspired rug. Back in the 50's and 60's they used asymmetrical and abstract patterns but that doesn't mean you can't add your own flare.

When adding the lighting you'll need to stay within the same guidelines as the furniture. Straight + clean. Most floor lamp bases are made out of wood and metal. Hanging ceiling lights most commonly have the bulbs visible and again have straight lines. A couple of my favorite stores to shop at that meet all the requirements (mostly) is Rove Concepts and West Elm. My own personal style finds can always be found at Lulu&Georgia as well.

Happy Shopping Blog lovers!
