The Mantel Life

It's been a minute since I put up a post. The holiday season is always so freakin' nuts around our home. Now that my 500 family members have left and we're back on schedule, I'm dedicating a few a hours a week to writing. While we're technically speaking of the holidays and as much as I absolutely LOVE them I always find it exciting to start a new year. Not that the last one was bad or uneventful because I can assure you it was not bad nor uneventful, I just love new adventures, ideas, opportunities, and change. I really embrace it for the most part.

With all the holiday decor stored away (if yours is not- quit slacking!) is your fireplace mantel in need of an update, new life, new look? Let me answer that for you- YES! The answer is always YES! I just recently had a friend text me about her fireplace mantel, it's not that her mantel is bare, or still looks like Christmas threw up on it....but it's just kinda blah. She sent me a photo of her recent attempt at livening up that baby. I laughed, not because it didn't look good it's actually cute, but because I think she took 2 vases away and added 3 little owls. I love this girl and we're friends so I am allowed to laugh at her. This post is all about the before and after of your mantel overhaul and what it can really do to your space. Here are some tips, they aren't rules so feel free to break free girlfran/boyfran:

1. Find that one main piece. It's the Anchor to your mantel. It can be a mirror, a picture, a painting, a statue...anything really. It should be the biggest focal point on the mantel.

2. Weight...yup you're going to put on weight. Well, mantel weight anyways and think of height while your adding weight. Lets put your mantel through a puberty growth spurt. It can be candles, lanterns, plants etc. These should be added to each outer side of your mantel.

3. Now for the fillers. Smaller framed photos or art pieces, smaller plants in cute planters. That sorta thing.

This is where the triangle effect is a great image tool. You can have multiple triangles or one main one. This is what I mean by that...

You're indirectly creating triangles through height, weight and position of your decor. Looking for balance throughout. BUT this is a suggestion as I myself am a total rule breaker...check out these mantel makers who are in detention hall with me!

**If you're more of a minimalist you can take away as much of the 'clutter' as you'd like and keep it simple, just because it's simple doesn't make it any less stunning.**
