3 Steps to a Beautiful Porch [of any size in any season]

The leaves are changing and fall is quickly approaching. The best season. I can’t get enough of the smells, the morning chill and the blanket of warmth that falls around noon while the sun is shining bright.

Nature walks, apple picking, baking cookies and warm apple cider fresh from the farmer’s market. If I was one of those YouTuber’s who posts about ‘fall routines’ that’s what mine would look like. To top off all the fall feels, I love to decorate the exterior of our home- this year it’s mustard tone ‘Mums’ in black planters, corn stalks, gourds, and the ‘ugly’ pumpkins just to add some character to our front porch.

A change in season can be a few different things for different people. It can be a fresh start to a new routine, a time to re-organize, a change in eating habits and what you consume, it can even be sad, emotional… the list can go on. One thing that I love doing is decorating (obviously) but not just the inside. I actually love to decorate the exterior. It can get me out of a mood funk, it's almost like hitting the 'reset' button on my emotions. I don’t always have time to do it for every season/holiday but one season I never miss is Fall. If you're on a budget keep reading...this can be accomplished on ANY budget. It can be also be daunting for some because they don’t find it as easy to pull a look together. So, I’ve come up with an execution plan that will work for any and all seasons. You’ll just sub out one decor piece for another depending on the season/holiday.

  1. Height- Try and maintain at least 3 levels in height to your décor. Add in hay stacks, corn stalks, wagons, lanterns, pumpkins of all sizes, use your stairs to stagger the heights of the pumpkins etc.

2. Colour- I typically choose one accent colour. When it comes to the floral pieces anyways, I only choose one. I find it looks more intentionally put together.

3. A door wreath (or decor)- This can be optional, especially if you have a unique door (painted, window placements etc.) for 8 out of 10 doors the wreathe will be your final touch. If you chose to forgo the wreathe, try adding another element to the porch. Make sure to keep the colours of your wreathe/'final touch element' true to the colours of your accent colour.

*tip- Green doesn’t count. If your using wreathes and greenery you can add an additional colour. Green won’t stand out if you have plants and a green wreathe on your door. Consider it a mute colour when decorating for a holiday or season. Its beautiful and such a natural colour you can add one other colour or even shade to bring your porch to life.
